Sammy Hagar Sees “Red”

One of may favorite rockers, Sammy Hagar is releasing his autobiography … “RED: My Uncensored Life In Rock” on March 15, 2011. Through his book, Sammy shares his crazy experiences in rock n’ roll, behind the scenes with VH of course, and his take on the experience of fame and success. I don’t know Sammy personally, but it seems to me that he tells it like it is, so I expect a lot candid details and not just bashing the VH brothers. We’ll have to wait and see. Are you looking forward to it?

Interview with Dan Lundholm from SpyTunes.com

Play

Earlier this week, I had an opportunity to interview Dan Lundholm, founder of SpyTunes.com and author of “The Guitar Conspiracy“. I first discovered SpyTunes several months ago in my search to for structured guitar learning program that went beyond video lessons, tablature, or guitar theory.

What really intrigued me is how he presents learning the guitar, much like learning a language you need to understand the grammatical rules … which is simple, with guitar it’s teaching your hands that takes time. He summarizes his method for understanding how to play guitar in this outstanding video: how to play guitar explained in 20 minutes.

Dan’s quest to find a teachable method for understanding how to play the guitar has spanned over 20 years. Among his vast musical experience, he spent 3 years at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music in the UK, where he was taught by Guthrie Govan and subsequently graduated with honors in professional musicianship.

Interview Highlights

  • We start off with Dan’s first attempts to learn guitar
  • Guitar players and sheet music
  • Learning acoustic songs with chords and lyrics
  • Instant gratification and shortcuts vs. being able to actually play
  • Practicing vs. interacting and understanding music
  • The limitations of guitar tabs
  • Music as a language
  • Dan’s thoughts on modern electric guitar
  • “Sweet Child of Mine” – a mixolydian scale?
  • 7 year old pianist vs. 30 year guitarist
  • Why Dan wrote the “The Guitar Conspiracy”

Dan is currently working on an electric guitar series in which he’ll be breaking down how to understand and play songs with multiple guitar parts.

I highly recommend the “The Guitar Conspiracy” and SpyTunes.com for those of you that are frustrated with learning guitar, need to improve your creativity, or simply want to use every tool available to help you you become the best guitarist that you can be.

Jimmy Page’s $700 Photo Album – Seriously?

Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin is putting together a handmade photo memoir of his life a guitarist. It won’t include much in the way of descriptions, just pictures. The hefty price tag has angered some fans, but they’ll only be 2,500 copies made, so I say don’t let it keep you awake at night. He didn’t say … “I’m doing this for the fans”, so don’t take offense. The book is projected to be released in late September. What do you think? Let me know if you buy a copy!
