Expression Theory – Combining Color and Sound to Understand Music

I recently had a chance to talk with Kevin Sonderegger, CEO and developer of Expression Theory. I’ll publish my interview with him in a future post, but I just wanted to give you a heads up this concept for improving your understanding of guitar. Kevin originally developed Expression Theory to help people of all backgrounds learn or improve their musical abilities. I wanted to learn more about this because I feel that anything that can simplify and help you understand how music works is worth looking into.

“Before Expression Theory, musical instruction relied on a system of black and white notation. It was very difficult to memorize scales on guitars and pianos. A lot of time was lost in that approach. Expression Theory has applied colored stickers to these instruments.

Once applied the student or practitioner is immediately relieved from searching where he/she can play and begins immediately developing the muscle memory needed to establish the foundations of music. Before one would rely on mapping the fretboard with letters from the English alphabet, and now they can project a beautiful array of colors that map the musical staff.

We invented a new method of notation called(SET), which unlike sheet music, instructs the player which note needs to be played, when it should be played, and with what finger it should be played with!”

Visit the Expression Theory and how it can help you learn guitar and let me know what you think of it. Also, look out for the interview post in the near future.

Introducing Singer-Songwriter Pia Dean

The UK’s Pia Dean is an emerging indie singer-songwriter whose acoustic songs are attracting vocalists to collaborate with her in performing her songs. Pia has been writing songs since the age of 15 with musical influences that cross various genres and including James Morrison, U2, Stevie Wonder, and Amy Winehouse.

Pia’s debut single titled “Maybe’” featuring Caroline Langford on vocals is available for download on iTunes.

It’s has been written that “Pia’s songs are autobiographical and writing for her is the perfect release for different coloured emotions. Once Pia is happy with a song she will then start to produce it in Logic experimenting with a mix of sounds from different genres.”

I wanted to listen for myself so I checked out her SoundCloud page. Pia breaks away from her intricate acoustics to have some fun with two dance mixes.

Featured Songs:

  • Hot Coals – A dance mix – Not in my musical wheelhouse but this song will get you moving.
  • Achilles Heal – Acoustic – Smooth vocals and accompaniment – Speaks to one’s vulnerability
  • Maybe – Acoustic Mix – To me the lyrics speak to hope for future, nice song.
  • Freefall – Acoustic – Suggests the joy in loosing yourself and letting go, to live in the moment.
  • 6:10 – Dance/R&B Mix

Enjoy these songs for yourself and look for more to come from Pia in the future.

KMan’s Rocks Heavy with “Prevail to Extinction”

Heavy Metal guitarist Kerman Rodríguez (KMan) is releasing his first album, “Prevail to Extinction” this April, and it will be available for download …. Free! Get the first single now below.

His album has been described as follows, “Like a rollercoaster. First, you are afraid expecting the ride. Then, when you are in, feeling all the adrenaline, suddenly stops, and there you are, screaming for more! and waiting again for the next song!

With that kind of description, I had to check it out for myself. Staring out as a studio musician in Bilbao, Spain, playing with his the OLDUVAI to great success in Spain, he has now developed into a one man band featuring his talents on his first cd.

In the first track “Lock N’ Load” you’ll hear the hard driving beat, wailing riffs and strong vocals. The combination is hard to resist. I look forward to the rest of the album and more on the horizon from KMan, but don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself!”
